REDUCTION IN THE NEED FOR PHARMACEUTICAL INTERVENTIONS IN MEDICAL PRESCRIPTIONS AFTER ELECTRONIC STANDARDIZATION OF PROTOCOLS PERFORMED BY THE MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM IN A PRIVATE CANCER CARE CLINIC IN VITÓRIA-ES

Introduction: Cancer care prescriptions have a high risk of adverse events and that a prescription error may be fatal. Thus, it is extremely important that protocols and prescriptions are standardized and that the entire multidisciplinary team is involved in order to reduce prescription and administration errors. Objective: To identify the impact of standardization of protocols in prescriptions in an electronic health care system in two units of a private cancer care clinic in Vitória-ES. Method: A total of 3,024 prescriptions were evaluated from January 2021 to July 2022. The implementation of the new electronic system with the revised protocols took place in May 2022. We evaluated the impact on the percentage reduction in the need for pharmaceutical interventions from this point on. March. Results: In the 4 months before the implementation of the new system, 524 prescriptions were evaluated and there was a need for intervention in 7 prescriptions with a percentage of 1.33%. Between May and August 2021, in the period of adaptation to the new electronic system, there was an increase in interventions, with a total of 2.95% out of 643 prescriptions. However, we observed that after this phase the need for pharmaceutical intervention dropped in a sustained way. In the period from September 2021 to July 2022, there were 17 interventions in 1,857 prescriptions (0.91%), and in the last 3 months from May to July 2022 there was no pharmaceutical intervention in the prescriptions. Conclusion: The involvement of the multidisciplinary team in the elaboration and standardization of cancer treatment protocols demonstrates a positive impact in reducing the need for pharmaceutical intervention and is shown to be a fundamental item in preserving patient safety.
