EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PROFILE OF PATIENTS WITH PANCREATIC NEOPLASIA IN BRAZIL FOR A DECADE

Introduction: Pancreatic cancer represents about 2% of cancers and 4% of deaths from this disease in Brazil. Most of the diagnoses are late and for having an aggressive development it is considered the most lethal tumor of the digestive tract. Its rare before 30 years old, it becomes more common at 60th. The incidence is more significant in males (1.3/1 ratio) and black people (1.6/1 ratio when compared to other races). Objective: The aim of this research was to verify the epidemiological profile of patients with pancreas neoplasia in Brazil over a decade. Methodology: This is an observational, cross-sectional and retrospective study, based on secondary data obtained from the SUS Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS), from DATASUS (Department of Informatics of the Brazilian Health System). Patients with malignant neoplasia in the pancreas were included, with temporal analysis in the last decade (from July 2011 to July 2020), in the state of Bahia (Brazil). Data were collected on September 22th and 23th, 2020. The variables analyzed were: age, race, gender, character of care, year and federation unit. The data were tabulated using Microsoft Excel, version 2016. Results: Diverging from the literature, no significant differences were found between genders in Brazil (50.5% for males) in the time estimated by this study for malignant pancreatic neoplasia. However, when stratifying the age group, there was a predominance of male population between 50 and 64 years old (53.8%) and female population between 10 and 29 years old (68.1%). In relation to ethnicity, there was a predominance of the white race, with 49.2%, followed by the brown population with 28.4%. Detailing the Carater of Attendance, a higher prevalence was found in urgent care (72.4%) as opposed to the elective (27.6%). Over a decade, the pathology was increasing up, except in 2020: the number of cases in 2019 was three times higher than 2011. In 2020, the tendency to increase remains, considering the available data (July/2020). Conclusion: Due to the late diagnosis, the increase in the number of cases in the country, the high rate of lethality and the low survival rate, knowing the epidemiological profile of patients with pancreatic cancer is very important for the better clinical efficiency and early diagnosis.
